The research is clear that others’ perceptual biases of women leaders can negatively impact women leaders’ career and organizational outcomes. I approach greater understanding of this social problem from different levels of analysis and using different research methods. In my talk I plan to share with you two very different ongoing studies on perceptions of women leaders. The first study takes a micro, experimental approach to understand follower reactions to male and female leaders’ work-family conflict. The second uses data from male and female leaders of organizations fighting homelessness in the United States to examine how agentic and communal leadership styles impact getting persons into shelters in the geographies these leaders serve.
