The main reason why I chose the HEC PhD program is because of its research reputation and the support offered to the PhD students. The reputation comes from the school's publication record and the international faculty that serve in the editorial boards of various highly regarded journals. The support provided to the students which goes far beyond financial support ensures that international students can adjust well to a life in France. Furthermore, the school and the departments invest in our placement and constant support is provided by the faculty to ensure that we have a good future in academics.
My years at HEC and in France was very pleasant. My PhD batchmates were international and very friendly. I enjoyed (and still enjoy) spending time with them. The campus offered excellent facilities for sports and a very good language program. I always had something interesting to do and the years somehow flew past. To make the life of PhD students easier, we had a great group of administrative coordinators who ensured that we received all the support we needed within and outside of school. Over the years I spent at HEC, support given to us and the focus towards the PhD program only grew.
The PhD study life was tough but rewarding. I was given sufficient freedom to choose my topic but also received the necessary guidance from my advisor and other faculty. Since PhD research is largely self-driven, motivation is quite important to get things done. Fortunately, I had a great cohort who helped get through those 'low' motivational periods. Further, my advisor and many of the faculty are very passionate about their research which always helps when there is a need for some motivation.
