Overview
We designed our program for highly qualified and motivated students who wish to acquire world-class research skills and pursue academic careers in accounting and management control.
The program is multidisciplinary in nature and features two concentrations: Financial Accounting and Management Accounting – linked by a common core.
The program comprises two years of structured course work accompanied with guided transition into research. HEC Paris places high weight on advising, mentoring and supporting students throughout their studies, and especially in preparation for the international job market.
Our PhD classes benefit from the interaction among students from all over the world, with backgrounds not only in accounting but also economics, finance, business administration and sociology.
Faculty members are highly performing in terms of international publications and are active members of the international community. They publish in or serve on the editorial boards of leading research journals, such as The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting and Economics, Contemporary Accounting Review, Accounting, Organizations & Society, European Accounting Review and many others.
Why join us
The specialization welcomes PhD students interested in quantitative and qualitative, research. The PhD program in Accounting and Management Control is a small and intensive program aiming to attract outstanding students with the highest level of ambition.
Only 1 to 2 students are enrolled every year. Selectivity, demanding and intensive course training, close supervision, and full immersion in research activities are cornerstones of our philosophy in PhD training. We are also pursuing a successful policy of encouraging academic exchanges with the world’s leading business schools and research presentations in academic conferences. Our international, research-driven, and young faculty is a key ingredient of success in our PhD Program.
Research Interactions
Weekly research seminar: Researchers from other universities present their research. Most academic departments in HEC Paris as well as the research centers organize research seminars on a regular basis as well as many other academic events. Students are encouraged to join these seminars already from the first year of studies. They give students a good idea of what they are expected to produce. They are also a good way to socialize with the professors of the departments and the other PhD students. Most of these research seminars are available to all PhD students from all specializations. Within the Accounting and Management Control department we organize over 20 seminars or brown bags per year and welcome regularly visiting faculty from other schools.
Pre-seminar workshop: Before each research seminar in our department, the PhD students and a different faculty each week meet for a “pre-seminar workshop” to discuss the paper presented at the seminar. It is a great opportunity for students to engage in a discussion about a different research topic every week, to learn from a faculty specialized in this field, and to generate new research ideas.
Internal brownbag: A faculty or a PhD student presents preliminary research ideas to faculty and doctoral students.
