Additionally, he credits the diverse network he built through HEC Paris, including professionals from various fields, with enhancing his understanding of different industries and supporting his professional growth and personal interests.
Read on as he shares his experience and thoughts on the Executive MBA program, as a way to develop the leadership skills needed for making strategic decisions and preparing for higher-level roles.
How does the EMBA support your career goals?
I currently work as a senior technical lead in cybersecurity, where my responsibilities range from engineering to strategic initiatives. While I have a strong technical foundation, I found that advancing in my career requires business skills and leadership knowledge that go beyond engineering. An Executive MBA provides me with these skills, allowing me to make more strategic decisions and preparing me to eventually move into higher-level roles that combine both technical and business responsibilities.
How did HEC Paris stand out in your EMBA search?
I took a methodical approach to selecting an EMBA, comparing top programs in both the US and Europe with a focus on the networks they offer and the impact they’ve had on alumni careers. HEC Paris quickly stood out for its prestigious reputation, strong alumni network, and its cultural relevance for me, as I have a French background. Returning to Paris for my studies also felt natural, as I had previously completed my engineering degree there. The program’s flexible structure enables me to keep up with my work in Amsterdam, which was an important consideration in my decision.
Which intake did you choose and why?
The specific intake I chose is the weeklong format, which is held once every two months and aligns well with my job commitments in Amsterdam and my family responsibilities. This setup has been invaluable, as it attracts a diverse, international cohort and gives me time to focus deeply on each module without disrupting my personal and professional life. My wife’s support has also been essential in making this possible, as we viewed the decision as a partnership that supports both my career and our family life. Additionally, the immersive nature of this format allows me to step away from work temporarily and fully engage with my studies.
How has the program helped you develop your leadership style?
This program has pushed me to redefine my leadership approach. In the past, I primarily focused on technical management, but the EMBA has helped me expand into people-centered leadership. Additionally, the program has reinforced the concept of self-leadership, especially valuable in my current work situation, where I lack a direct reporting line. Navigating organizational dynamics independently has taught me to stay focused on my long-term goals and purpose, which the EMBA program has helped me clarify. This combination of broader leadership and self-direction has been instrumental in shaping my approach to future challenges.
How did you tailor your EMBA to align with your career goals?
I customized my EMBA journey to align closely with my long-term goals in venture capital and strategy. I chose courses that cover emerging trends and complex regional dynamics, focusing on areas like AI, which I studied through the GNAM network at the National University of Singapore, and a specialization in entrepreneurship through Babson College. These courses aren’t just academic for me; they’re directly relevant to the skills I need to grow in my field and understand broader business landscapes.
How did the EMBA program help you put new ideas and strategies into practice right away?
The EMBA program has been designed for immediate, real-world application, which I’ve benefited from as I work on my venture fund entrepreneurial project, set as my Capstone. Each session introduces new ideas and frameworks that I can apply directly, whether it’s refining my project’s financial structure or exploring new strategies for fund management. Being surrounded by professionals from various fields, including finance, has given me fresh perspectives and actionable insights, allowing me to progress in ways that would have been challenging without this diverse input.
What has been your most valuable experience during this EMBA journey?
My Capstone project has been a significant highlight. Working on it has allowed me to apply classroom knowledge directly to a real-world project, focusing on cybersecurity investing. This experience has not only opened doors professionally but also allowed me to pursue my passion within the program. Additionally, being invited to participate in the Final Jury for X-HEC Entrepreneurs has been an inspiring opportunity, allowing me to engage with accomplished entrepreneurs and learn from their perspectives.
How has the HEC Paris network impacted your professional and personal growth?
The network I’ve built through HEC Paris has been invaluable. Meeting professionals from different sectors has expanded my understanding of various industries, sparking new ideas and connections that I would not have encountered otherwise. Surprisingly, I even connected with individuals who share my interest in art—a connection I rarely find in professional settings. This network has enriched my experience beyond career growth, offering a combination of personal and professional enrichment that I hadn’t anticipated.
