Armin Steinbach Nominated as Arbitrator in Bilateral Trade Disputes Involving the European Union

The European Commission has published a pool of individuals eligible for appointment as arbitrators and trade and sustainability experts in bilateral disputes under trade agreements with third countries. Armin Steinbach is one of the selected individuals following an assessment of an independent selection panel of experienced international judges and academics.

Dispute settlement is an important element in ensuring the implementation of the EU’s trade and investment agreements with third countries. The European Commission is responsible for representing the EU in any dispute settlement procedures. Disputes concerning the application of the trade agreement are typically submitted to an arbitration panel composed of an uneven number of arbitrators appointed in accordance with the agreement of the parties to the dispute. Similarly, trade and sustainable development experts may be called to be part of an expert panel tasked with settling disputes arising in the context of the implementation of the trade and sustainable development chapter of EU’s trade agreements.

Armin has been selected to be eligible to serve in both functions, as arbitrator to trade disputes as well as trade and sustainable development experts. The selection decision reflects Armin's expertise in the area of international trade law and European economic law.
