Summer Student Story
I wholeheartedly recommend this program to anyone at the intersection of business, policy, and environmental science.
Born in Iraq, with formative years in Jordan and the USA, I’ve always been intrigued by the crossroads of technology and global impact. My journey in systems engineering began at George Mason University, followed by an MBA at Imperial College London. These experiences set the stage for my deep dive into environmental leadership, particularly through this inspiring summer program at HEC Paris.
I wholeheartedly recommend this program to anyone at the intersection of business, policy, and environmental science. It’s particularly well-suited for those who want to lead change and develop sustainable strategies that matter. The skills and insights I gained at HEC are more than just educational, they’re a toolkit for life, steering my career and my contributions towards a more sustainable future.
What sets HEC Paris apart is how the program blends theoretical knowledge with real-world application. It’s about rolling up your sleeves and applying what you learn to make a tangible difference. This hands-on approach is crucial for tackling today's complex global issues effectively.
Guided by Professor Jean-Michel Gauthier, this course was a real eye-opener. His expertise covered not only climate science but also its intersections with finance and geopolitics, sparking rich discussions and encouraging us to question and contribute actively. This wasn’t just about listening; it was about engaging deeply and thinking critically about our planet’s future.
The course’s focus was sharply aligned with the Paris Agreement goals, making every lecture relevant and urgent. We frequently discussed the stark reality that "the impact of climate change is unequivocal and could become irreversible soon." Learning about the significant rise in CO2 levels due to the industrial revolution; from about 280 parts per million in the 18th century to 410 ppm in 2020, underscored the urgency of our discussions and fueled my commitment to sustainable practices.
Living at HEC Paris was a breath of fresh air. Just a stone’s throw from Paris yet tucked away in a peaceful, green setting, the campus was the perfect backdrop for both study and reflection. It was a world apart from the bustling city vibes of my previous studies, providing a calm environment to focus and grow.
Continuing my journey as an engineer, the lessons from HEC Paris are at the core of my professional vision and personal mission. The program didn’t just transform my understanding, it transformed me, making me a more informed leader ready to tackle the challenges of tomorrow.
