Summer Student Story
As a student coming from a public policy background, this program provided a valuable window into the world of finance. The content of this course enabled me to build bridges between public and private sector modes of thinking.
Having taken an interest in Impact Investment as part of my studies, I decided to take the plunge and enrol in the HEC Paris Summer Program on Sustainable Finance and Investment. It was a challenging two-weeks with a steep learning curve, but I have no regrets about my decision. The program structure strikes a sound balance between theory and practice. In the morning, we enjoyed formal courses and presentations given by the academic director Mme Layal Nabhan. In the afternoon, we worked on case studies led by various guest speakers from the world of sustainable finance. During these two weeks, we were provided with the optimal learning environment where industry professionals from Societe Generale, LVMH and the World Bank shared valuable insights into what it is like to work in the industry.
As the nature of the course is industry-focused, entering from the path of ESG and Sustainability practices was definitely an atypical route for someone seeking to gain an introduction into the world of finance. However, I found the program to be an enriching one, regardless of your background, if you are curious enough to learn, and critical enough to question. What also really helped were the case studies; they translated theories to hands-on opportunities working as an industry professional. In addition, it was interesting to reframe concepts and ideas in different disciplines I had come across in my undergraduate studies. I found that the ability to shift perspective, understand and empathise with the true intention of companies to be key factors that drive success in the business world.
During my time on the HEC campus, there was something new to be discovered and learned every day, making connections with people from all professional backgrounds, from all parts of the world. Furthermore, HEC provided us with an abundance of resources for those seeking to elevate their career and personal objectives. Networking and social events were also offered by the summer team throughout the two weeks.
‘The more you know, the more you dare’ is the motto of HEC. After this course, I can confidently say that I am ready to take the knowledge I have accumulated here and apply it to the next stage of my personal and professional life. The Sustainable Finance and Investment Summer Program is highly enjoyable and one I would recommend to those with an interest in Sustainable Development or those seeking a solid understanding of ESG from a Finance perspective.
