Summer Student Story
From the moment I arrived at HEC Paris, I was impressed by the campus’s embodiment of both tradition and innovation, much like the luxury brands I was about to study. The Luxury Management Summer Program provided a unique opportunity to delve into how these brands not only endure but excel in an ever-evolving market.
As a Master’s student in Industrial Engineering at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, I've always been drawn to the precision and technicality of my field. However, my academic pursuits have never been limited to technology alone. From a young age, as an art enthusiast, I was captivated by the intricate design and unparalleled quality that set luxury brands apart. Over time, this passion evolved beyond aesthetics, leading me to appreciate the technical and strategic aspects that underpin luxury across various sectors. My internship and bachelor thesis at Porsche were pivotal in this journey, offering me first hands-on insights into luxury goods management. These experiences, combined with my interdisciplinary studies, led me to being even more interested in understanding the strategies that contribute to the success of luxury brands.
The Summer School at HEC Paris was the ideal environment to refine these insights. It offered an in-depth exploration of luxury brand management, addressing critical issues such as maintaining brand heritage, the role of emotions, sustainability, and digital transformation—challenges that are increasingly defining the future of the industry. The diverse perspectives shared by guest speakers further deepened our understanding, allowing us to approach luxury management from multiple angles.
One of the highlights of the program was the final group project. Collaborating with students from around the world, we applied our gained theoretical knowledge to a real-world brand, navigating the complexities of maintaining a brand’s exclusivity and desirability. This hands-on experience revealed the delicate balance between tradition and innovation that luxury brands must master.
However, it soon became clear, that the Summer School was about more than academics; it was an opportunity to engage with students from diverse backgrounds, each contributing unique perspectives that enriched our discussions and broadened my understanding of global markets. The friendships and networks I built during this time are something I will carry with me long after the program and I'm very thankful for that.
In the end, the experience has given me a nuanced understanding of what it takes for premium brands to succeed in a competitive environment. I look forward to applying these insights in my professional journey, helping brands navigate their challenges with thoughtful, informed decisions.
For those with an interest in luxury and a desire to learn from some of the leading minds in the field, this program offers a truly enriching experience. Regardless of your academic background, it’s an opportunity to deepen your understanding and grow both personally and professionally.
