Tom van Maastricht

Master in International Finance

Tom van Maastricht

Navigating the HEC Paris admissions process: the experience of Tom

What motivated you to pursue your Master’s at HEC Paris?

I chose HEC Paris because it offers one of the best finance master's programs globally, providing an unparalleled foundation for entering the competitive finance job market. Beyond academics, the immersive campus environment enriches student life, and being in France allows me to learn a new language, adding both cultural and professional value. The program’s practical approach ensures optimal preparation for a career in finance.

Is there anything you wish you had known before applying or during the application?

I wish I had known more about the interview process and how critical it is to demonstrate a clear career trajectory and strong motivation. Highlighting where you want to go and why this program is essential to your journey is crucial. These aspects can significantly strengthen your application.

What was your biggest challenge during your application journey, and how did you overcome it?

The interview was the toughest part for me, but assembling the required documents, like reference letters and official statements of enrollment, also proved challenging. To overcome this, I recommend organizing these essentials well in advance, even before starting your application. Early preparation can save you a lot of stress.

How did you prepare for your HEC Paris interview, and what would you recommend others focus on?

I practiced with two friends, one of whom thankfully included technical corporate finance questions. To my surprise, most of my interview was technical as my interviewer was a corporate finance professor. I recommend applicants to focus on articulating why they chose France, HEC Paris, and their program. Be very specific about your career goals, including the role you see yourself in five years, and explain what you’ve done to get there and how this program will help. Also, prepare thoroughly for technical questions and be ready for alumni observers during your interview.

If you had one piece of advice for applicants, what would it be?

My biggest piece of advice is to clearly define your dream job and how the program will help you achieve it. Be specific about what the role entails, the company or industry, the skills required, and why it excites you. This clarity will not only guide your application but also strengthen your overall case for admission.
