A New Business Case on a Sustainable City

Strategy
Published on:

“Montrennoble: Flourishing sustainable city in France” case, written by HEC Paris Professor Bertrand V. Quélin, Bouygues Chair Professor in Smart City and the Common Good and HEC graduate Isaure Fraissinet, has just been released on the Case Centre platform. The case's objective is to help participants analyze the needs of a sustainable and smart city in an encompassing manner, meeting the city’s energy and mobility needs today as well as anticipating the future.

Montrennoble

Montrennoble is the story of a fictitious city that is striving to become a sustainable and eco-friendly city. In January 2023, the city mayor Jeanne Delaromen sends out a call for proposal to companies that will support the city hall’s ambitions to forge a forward-looking eco-friendly smart city.

Jeanne’s ambition is to bring forth this bustling metropolis in France into a future that would address climate-change issues and at the same time be transformed into an utterly modern city to strive toward zero emissions and community principles based on social inclusiveness.

Without a sharp vision in mind, she and her smart city committee sent out a call for proposals to three major players in the area on smart and sustainable cities. The case takes a path of discovery and innovation with an open mind in anticipating the energy needs of the city, as it aims to be efficient as well as exemplary to other communities.

Why this case?

The case highlights the intricately linked and multi-layered issues involved in sustainability initiatives on a large scale. It also calls for creative solutions that participants are able develop in class discussions.
