Program overview

In the current world of business, there is a growing importance of digital tools in providing a competitive advantage to organizations. From a mere commodity, digital technologies have now become a key differentiator. Firms, both big and small, are making huge investments in emerging digital tools related to artificial intelligence, big data, social media, blockchains, and platforms. However, are they getting the returns commensurate with their burgeoning digital investment budgets? Are there some underlying rules and principles that senior managers like you should keep in mind when deciding on implementing digital technologies? Are there any guidelines that you can use for undertaking a digital transformation project? Who should manage the digital resources within the organization —the IT department or the functional department? What should be the extent of involvement of functional managers in the process of digital transformation and implementation?

The answers to these, and many such questions related to digital management in the organizational context continue to remain ambiguous. The fundamental digital management course is premised on two broad objectives

1) to introduce you to some of the basic as well as significant upcoming technology related concepts, and

2) to inform you about the related implementation challenges and opportunities.

The discussion will cut across the traditional functional areas, to understand the common issues and possible actionable strategies.

Specifically, in the initial part of the module you will understand some of the basic principles that govern digital management in the organizational context. Building on these basics, the next part of the module immerses you in real‐life organizational situations to work out solutions to complex multifaceted digital management related problems. Finally, you will engage in a reflection activity to consider how you can implement the knowledge gained and strategies learned in your own organizational context, ensuring a practical and effective digital transformation.
